Spring Break at Sea

A spring break cruise packs beaches, nightlife and a few new countries into a single week or less. Three-, four- and five-night sailings from Florida to the Bahamas, and week-long trips to the Caribbean and Mexico, line up neatly with most school breaks.

Unlike a beach-town hotel, the ship includes your meals and moves you between destinations. A typical short sailing might combine a day at sea, a stop in the Bahamas and a cruise line’s private island; a week could take in Cozumel, Jamaica or the Cayman Islands.

Before You Book: The Spring Break Checklist

  • Confirm everyone’s exact break dates — schools rarely match.
  • Check the cruise line’s age rules against every traveler’s age on the sailing date.
  • Decide who shares which cabin before anyone pays a deposit.
  • Make sure every traveler has the right ID or passport well ahead of time.
  • Budget for gratuities, drinks, Wi-Fi and excursions on top of the fare.
  • Fly in the day before if you are not driving to the port.
  • Buy travel insurance — it protects your money if plans change.

Spring Break Cruise Questions

Can a group of 18-year-olds take a spring break cruise alone?

On most major lines sailing from the US, no. Guests under 21 generally need to share a cabin with, or travel with, an older companion who meets the line’s requirements. Read our age rules page and confirm with the line before booking.

How far ahead should we book spring break?

As early as you can. Spring break weeks are popular with families as well as students, so the best-priced cabins on short sailings go quickly.

Are spring break cruises more expensive?

Fares often rise during school holidays because demand is high. Sailing the week before or after the peak, if your schedule allows, can help.

Making the Most of a Short Sailing

On a three- or four-night cruise, every hour counts. Board early on embarkation day, plan your first port before you arrive, and pick one or two evening shows rather than trying to see everything. Agree on a meeting spot for the group — the main pool deck or a particular lounge — so nobody wastes time searching for friends without phone service.
