Semester-long voyages, class trips and itineraries that teach.
Plan an Educational CruiseLearning at Sea
Some of the best classrooms float. From full semester-long study-abroad voyages to school trips and history-rich itineraries, cruising can be genuinely educational — not just a break from it.
Study-abroad voyages
Semester at Sea is the best-known example: a multi-country semester on a ship, with academic credit through its partner university. You apply through the program itself.
School and university group trips
Language, history, marine science and culture courses built around a regular cruise, with faculty as chaperones.
History-rich itineraries
Mediterranean and Northern Europe cruises visit cities that many students study for years.
Nature and science
Alaska’s glaciers, Caribbean reefs and the Panama Canal bring science and engineering to life.
Itineraries That Teach

- Mexico’s Yucatán — excursions from Cozumel and Costa Maya can include Maya ruins.
- Mediterranean — Rome, Athens, Barcelona and more, many within reach of cruise ports.
- Northern Europe — Viking history, Scandinavian design and Baltic capitals.
- Alaska — glaciology, wildlife and Alaska Native culture.
- Panama Canal — one of the great engineering projects of the 20th century.

Planning a School or Class Cruise
- Check your school’s travel and chaperone policies before you approach families.
- Make sure every student under the line’s minimum age is matched with a qualifying adult.
- Collect passports and parental consent forms early.
- Build a simple learning plan: pre-trip reading, port-day activities and a post-trip project.
- Book group shore excursions with an educational focus.
Educational Voyage Questions
Can I earn college credit on a cruise?
On dedicated study-abroad voyages, yes — credit is granted through the sponsoring university, not the ship. Ordinary cruises do not carry academic credit, though some schools build them into approved courses.
Can a school group or class take a cruise?
Yes, as a group booking with adult chaperones who meet the line’s age rules. Plan early and make sure the school’s travel policies allow it.
Turning Any Cruise Into a Learning Trip
You don’t need a formal program to learn on a cruise. Read a little about each port before you arrive, choose at least one excursion with a guide who explains the history or ecology, and keep a short travel journal or photo essay. Many ships also offer port talks and destination lectures on sea days. Students studying a language can practice it ashore; marine-biology fans can book a guided snorkel instead of a beach chair. Teachers often find these small habits make a vacation count toward class projects.
